Our prices are published on the site, which is unusual in this trade, and it means we get asked a fair question: what is the actual difference between the cheap one and the expensive one? Here is the breakdown, in labour rather than marketing.
The $20 exterior hand wash
Pre-rinse, foam, two-bucket hand wash, wheels and tyres, hand dry. About twenty to thirty minutes of one person’s time. It removes road film and salt and leaves the paint clean. It does not touch the inside, it does not remove bonded contamination, and it does not fix any existing defects.
This is the right service if the car is basically in good shape and you want it maintained. Done every couple of weeks, it is genuinely all most cars need.
The $60 to $80 interior or mini detail
Now you are paying for a cabin. Full vacuum including under seats, wipe-down of every hard surface, glass inside, door jambs, trim dressed. The mini detail pairs a hand wash with that vacuum and wipe-down.
The jump in price is almost entirely time. A proper interior takes far longer than an exterior wash because it cannot be done with a pressure washer. It is hands and detail brushes in tight spaces.
The $180 to $250 full detail
Everything above, plus the work that actually changes the condition of the car rather than just cleaning it: carpet and upholstery shampoo and extraction, stain treatment, decontamination of the paint, and a protective layer applied at the end.
The reason this costs several times the wash is that it is measured in hours, not minutes, and it involves machines and consumables. Extraction pulls dirt out of the foam of the seat rather than off the surface.
Why SUVs cost more than sedans
Not a markup. More surface, more glass, more carpet, usually a third row and a larger boot. Roughly a third more time on the same job, which is why our pricing runs in three size bands rather than one flat number.
How to actually choose
- Car looks fine, just dirty. Hand wash. Do not buy the detail.
- Interior has lived through a winter or a family. Interior detail. The exterior can wait.
- Selling the car, or resetting it after a few years. Full detail. This is where it earns its money back.
- Paint looks hazy in sunlight. That is swirl marks, and no wash fixes it. That is paint correction, a separate job.
The most expensive service is not the best service. It is the right one for a specific condition. If you describe the car honestly we will tell you which tier it needs, including when that is the cheap one.
