Every week someone asks us which protection to get, and most of the time they are comparing three things that are not really competitors. Wax, ceramic coating and paint protection film do different jobs. Here is the plain version.
Wax and sealant
Wax is a sacrificial layer that sits on the clear coat, adds gloss and makes water bead. A carnauba wax lasts roughly six to eight weeks. A synthetic sealant lasts four to six months. Neither adds meaningful scratch resistance. What they do is make the car easier to clean and look noticeably better doing it.
Wax makes sense if you like the look, you wash the car yourself, and you are not trying to solve a durability problem. It is the cheapest option and the shortest lived.
Ceramic coating
A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that chemically bonds to the clear coat and cures into a hard, slick layer. It lasts years rather than weeks, it resists chemical etching from bird droppings and road salt far better than wax, and it makes winter grime rinse off with much less effort.
The thing most people misunderstand: most of the cost is the preparation, not the coating. A coating locks in whatever is underneath it. If the paint has swirls and you coat over them, you have sealed the swirls in for three years. That is why proper ceramic work includes paint correction first, and why a $200 coating and a $900 coating are not the same product badly priced. They are different amounts of labour.
What a coating does not do is stop rock chips. It is a chemical barrier, not a physical one.
Paint protection film (PPF)
PPF is a thick, clear urethane film applied physically over the panels. It is the only one of the three that stops stone chips, and good film is self-healing, meaning light marks disappear with heat. It is also by far the most expensive, and it is usually applied only to the high-impact areas: front bumper, hood leading edge, mirrors.
PPF is worth it if you drive the 401 daily, if the car is new and you intend to keep it pristine, or if it is a vehicle where a repaint is genuinely expensive.
What a Toronto winter changes
Road salt is the deciding factor here. Salt brine is chemically aggressive and it sits on the car for months. Wax is largely gone by January. A ceramic coating holds up through the season and makes the car far quicker to rinse clean, which matters because the realistic goal in winter is keeping salt exposure short. PPF protects against the sand and stone chips that come with salted roads.
None of the three is underbody rustproofing, and anyone telling you their coating stops rust underneath is overselling it. Salt gets into seams no product reaches.
The honest recommendation
- Car you keep two or three years, driven daily. Ceramic coating. Best return per dollar in this climate.
- Older car, cosmetic priority, tight budget. Sealant. Cheap, effective, repeat twice a year.
- New or expensive car, highway commute. PPF on the front end, ceramic over the rest.
If someone tries to sell you all three on a ten-year-old commuter, push back.
